Migrations Suck

I had to switch hosting companies this weekend, it was not fun and it took me forever to backup and migrate.

A few weeks ago, I tried to add a dotnet core site to my account with my shared hoster and found out that they did not have it installed on their servers. This was after I just got an email from them about renewing my 2-year subscription. I can't continue with a company that hasn’t bothered to stay current. But I wanted to give them a chance, I started a chat with their support and tried to confirm. I don’t want to get into any detail but it was apparent they didn’t know what I was talking about and couldn’t care less that I had to cancel my services. Spent the rest of that weekend researching new shared hosting companies to host play sites of mine and give me a place to test things before I gave up and went back to real life.

Now we are at this weekend and the renewal date is up. I think “hey maybe they’ll be really great I'll call them up they'll install all the latest stuff and I can forget about this for another 2 years”. Dial the phone number that is located under the logo on every page of the site. What… I get the number no longer exists. Back to the drawing board.

I pick up where I left off with finding a new hosting company and eventually decide. This time I signed up for 3 years and got started migrating the sites. I will spare you the boring details. It was 2 days of FTPing here and there, backing up, database backups, database restores, several chats and phone calls with various service providers, creating sites, creating accounts, updating DNS and learning the new interface.

I didn’t completely migrate everything but almost. I did run into an issue where one of the database usernames were different and the schemes were based on the user. Maybe one day I'll fix that but I think I will probably just get the data out and move on to the next big thing.

I'm only writing this because I need the content for the site and I didn't have any idea what the content that was here before was talking about. I just need to add writing a blog to the list above. Sorry to waste your time.
